Vehicles emissions

The European directives CE 2017/1151 and CE 2018/1832 have required each vehicle certification body (type approval authority) since 2020 to carry out in-service conformity tests (In Service Conformity, ISC). From 2019, we received the mission for the SPW MI, to carry out these tests on vehicles in service selected within the European Union, in order to verify compliance with a series of criteria.

These tests consist of carrying out two types of tests: a test in real driving conditions with on-board equipment (RDE = Real Driving Emissions) and a test on a roller bench in the laboratory under standardized conditions (WLTP Procedure = Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure).

For measurements in real conditions, since 2018, we have had equipment called PEMS (Portable Emissions Measurement System), thanks to our anticipated research project with our own funds, PEMSWALL (Prospecting of Emissions from Automobile Engines on Walloon Roads). Regarding the laboratory, funding was granted for its construction on the Colfontaine site The laboratory is now ISO 17020 accredited and operational. Between 2020 and 2024, while waiting for the end of the project, vehicle tests have already been subcontracted in Europe.

In addition to this mission, we want to capitalize on this new cutting-edge tool, and launch a series of activities around this theme through research projects.
