February 22, 2018 – Les Jeudis de l’Aquapôle, Sart Tilman

Christophe Frippiat, our head of analytical laboratories, will present an overview of the presence of endocrine disruptors in Wallonia’s surface and ground waters. This intervention follows on from the BIODIEN project, developed by ISSeP and DGO3, CRAW and SWDE.

Initiated by the Service Public de Wallonie, the BIODIEN aims to carry out an initial screening for the presence of known or suspected endocrine disruptors in Walloon waters, and involves three Walloon public laboratories within the GISREAUX scientific interest group (Groupement d’intérêt scientifique wallon de référence pour la qualité des eaux). In all, nearly 200 potentially interesting molecules (endocrine disruptors or not) are being sought, ranging from alkylphenols, phthalates, perfluorinated compounds and PCBs, to pesticides such as pyrethroids and triazoles. These substances are tested in a representative selection of groundwater, surface water, runoff, wastewater treatment plant discharges and bottled water. The analytical methods used are necessarily multiple: chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, bioassays (YES-YAS), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). The project involves the analysis of around 275 samples of surface water, groundwater, runoff, wastewater treatment plant discharge and bottled water.
